The terms on every spec sheet
Plain-English definitions for the shorthand we all use on the phone.
Greige (Grey)
Cloth straight off the loom: unbleached, undyed, unfinished. Sold to processors running their own dye house.
RFD
Ready For Dyeing. Scoured and bleached, free of optical brighteners, prepared so your shade lands true.
GSM
Grams per square metre, the standard weight measure. Higher GSM means a heavier, denser cloth.
Construction
Ends × picks per inch, e.g. 108 × 56. The first figure is warp density, the second weft.
Yarn-dyed
Yarn coloured before weaving, so checks, stripes and chambrays are woven in rather than printed on.
What our specs actually mean
A quote from us looks like 100% cotton twill · 108 × 56 · 148 cm · 285 GSM. Read left to right: the fibre and weave, then the construction, then the finished width, then the weight.
Construction is ends × picks per inch: warp density first, weft second. Higher numbers mean a tighter, denser cloth. GSM is grams per square metre: roughly 120 for shirting, 250–350 for bottom weight, 400+ for canvas.
Width is quoted finished for dyed goods and loom-state for greige, so allow for pull-in during processing when you are costing a greige lot.
